Description
A Holter monitor records an electrocardiogram for 24 hours or longer. It is extremely useful for identifying and diagnosing rhythm or heart rate disorders that may be associated with symptoms such as “fluttering,” unprovoked tachycardia, dizziness, or fainting spells.
The test is completely safe and painless. The device consists of a small recorder about the size of a cell phone that is placed in a belt or carrying case, and electrode cables that are applied to the patient’s chest.
To perform the test
The electrodes are placed on the patient’s chest in such a way as to ensure optimal recording. In some cases, local shaving may be necessary so that the adhesive pads remain in place for the entire duration of the recording.
The device automatically records the heart rate without requiring any action from the patient. The patient simply continues their daily activities as usual, except for showering or bathing, since the device and cables must not get wet. It is advisable that if any of the symptoms under investigation are observed during the day, the exact time and the symptom should be noted so that a comparison can be made with the electrocardiogram during the analysis of the recording.
